South Yorkshire Historic Characterisation website now available

Discover the history of your landscape

The past is not just something we can learn about from books or in a museum. Wherever you live or work in South Yorkshire, your home or workplace will have a historic character that can be read like words on a page, telling the story of how, when and why it was built.

‘Historic Characterisation’ is a new way of recording the different stories visible in the environment around us. This project has described the historic characteristics of every part of South Yorkshire and the website is your chance to access the records and find out more.

Describing the historic character of South Yorkshire is more than just recording the past. When deciding on new building schemes, understanding the character of the landscape will help us to understand what makes a place distinctive, ensuring the story of our landscape will pass on to future generations.

The characterisation project was carried out by the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service with funding from English Heritage. The results form part of the South Yorkshire Sites & Monuments Record. To visit the website, use the link on our links page.
