This decorated circular object is an escutcheon from an Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl. It was found during excavations of the Medieval farm buildings at Roystone Grange.

The design combines spirals with trumpet patterns. The trumpets look like stylised animal heads. This is typical of Anglo-Saxon designs.

We do not know how this came to be at the Medieval farm. Perhaps one of the farmers found it on the estate and kept it as a trinket. It may be all that remains of a lost Anglo-Saxon burial.
