Excavations at Roystone Grange

Site name : Roystone Grange
Site type : Living site

Time period : Medieval

This photograph shows the Medieval buildings at Roystone Grange under excavation. The stone walls of the building can be seen. This is Building B which was built in the early 13th century.

This building was quite grand. It had big stone walls, resting on a specially made plinth. The two internal rooms were separated by a staircase. The building therefore had an upper floor.

In the foreground, the excavators are using mattocks to remove thicker layers of soil. This area is outside the building. Inside the building they are using trowels.
