This group of finds are from one of the richest Anglo-Saxon burials ever found in the Peak District. It was inserted into the top of a much older barrow in the 7th century AD. This barrow at Cow Low was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1846.
The woman buried here was found with gold and silver objects. The gold pin set with its garnet settings and the glass bowl are particularly fine. They are the only surviving examples in this region. Many of the rich objects were found inside a wooden box wrapped in cloth, which sadly does not survive today.
