Time period : Anglo-Saxon
Material : Gold; Gemstone; Metal
Object type : Grave goods; Jewellery; Personal item
Museum number : J93.708
This lovely object is the only surviving piece from an excavation near Winster in 1765 or 1766.
The disc is a fine example of mid 7th century gold and garnet jewellery. It is made from a piece of circular silver plate, covered with a layer of gold and decorated with gold and garnets.
The function of the disc is unclear. It may be a brooch, but this is uncertain as it has no pin fastening on the back. It may have been mounted onto another object, perhaps made of wood or leather, which did not survive.
