The pin set from Cow Low is one of the most remarkable objects excavated by Thomas Bateman. It is a unique find from the Peak District. Examples are known from other parts of the country and from Europe.

The combination of gold and garnets was a particular favourite of the Anglo-Saxons. This pin set was probably a piece of dress jewellery, worn on special occasions. The Anglo-Saxons used two brooches and a string of beads as a dress fastening. This is simply a grander version of that. It probably belonged to one of the richer members of society.
