This is a fragment of an Anglo-Saxon brooch. It was found during excavations at the Medieval farm at Roystone Grange.
It is decorated and has traces of gilding. It is part of a large type of brooch called a square headed brooch. These were in use in the 6th century. Many examples are known from burials across the country.
The Anglo-Saxon burials in the Peak District are of 7th century date. This makes this object particularly interesting. It is unfortunate that we do not know where it was originally found.
